HIVE – our hydrological need of cosmic lines is an interdisciplinary project whose detonator is the famous Michelangelo’s painting “Tondo Doni”. In this masterpiece, the Holy Family is shown in the tender and daily gesture of passing the Child from the hands of his father to the hands of his mother. HIVE represents an extension, a new vision of the concept and image of the Holy Family. The formal and aesthetic composition of the painting offers the possibility to interpret that painting through multiple means of artistic expression, such as dance and plastic art, sound and theatre.
My generation and the one before it urgently need an enlargement of the concept of the holy family, an extension that covers all species. For me, a picture of the „Holy Family“ is more an anthropological than a religious phenomenon. I immediately start to reflect on the relationship between family members and their relation to our planet. Where did the idea of family come from? Family is probably the oldest form of togetherness and has always been related to survival. According to the latest paleoanthropological studies, the early Homo already formed small communities, families and tribes. Pressured by climate change and glaciation, it had to move away and started traveling in small groups. Unlike other species, Homo sapiens spent more time with its offspring, which prompted the evolution of what we call culture: learning, imitation, playfulness, relationships, sharing food, etc. Family was the strongest means of survival in difficult times. Is it possible to enlarge our vision of what we call a family? This project tackles that question. My generation seems to be inclined to present itself outside the context of family, society or nation. It seems that it doesn’t even see itself as citizens of one world. But the point is that the nations are not able to imagine them out of their paradigms. We are faced with serious global problems (climate change, migrations, etc..), and we should join forces as united nations to overcome them and to eventually create a human species which will survive the 21st century. We probably need to invent new political and social forms of togetherness, if we want to preserve ourselves and others from the ever-growing inequalities on our planet, and to reestablish a sustainable level of responsibility towards Nature.
– Pietro Marullo
Pietro Marullo is an Italian artist based in Brussels, where he founded the INSIEME IRREALI Company, supported by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. His interdisciplinary work lies at the intersection of visual and performing art, installation and new technologies, deeply focused on social, historical, and anthropological topics. His works are presented on four continents, at dance and performing art festivals, and in theatres. Since 2015, Pietro has been developing an anthropological and aesthetical reflection on reality and symbolic languages. This approach has led him to create an «imaginary of the species », a philosophical statement that should conduct our societies to face their own histories and common global issues from a larger point of view. Since 2017, he has worked at the Academy of Music and Theatre of Vilnius (Lithuania), where he holds workshops and lectures on the Metaphorical body method and Documentary Theatre.
