STAYING ALIVE

idea, choreography & performance: Jasna L. Vinovrški
collaborators: Mini iPad, knjige / mini iPad and the books
music: Bee Gees "Staying Alive"
This work was created within larger project "Migrant Bodies", which was supported by the programme EU Culture 2007-2013.

Staying alive, the latest work of choreographer Jasna L. Vinovrški, reflects upon the issues of order and control in migration of human and non human entities. It questions how the juridical apparatus of the law, which today has a crucial role in the control of the migration processes, has been affected and perpetuated by the production of knowledge and discourse around the subject of migration.
A woman in a neat official suit chews up legal jargon.Teetering on a pile of books, and dependent on her iPad, she creates precarious and fragile situations for herself. Subtle humour and multiple absurdities build as the performer gradually enters a state of emergency about which W. Benjamin says: “the tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the 'state of emergency' in which we live is not exception but the rule.”
„Using the soundtrack of the Bee Gees, Jasna deals with migration with such charm, wit and simplicity rooted in her two objects (her iPad and book) that it has you laughing, in awe and crying at the same time. Genius." Wieke Eringa, Artistic Director of Yorkshire Dance

Jasna L. Vinovrški is a performer, choreographer, teacher and eternal student of life. She grew up in Zagreb, Croatia, where she gained her first experiences in contemporary dance and where her artistic roots are. She lives and works abroad, but is continually connected with Croatia. As an artist, she is interested in issues related to bureaucratic structures and identity within those structures. Recently, Jasna investigates the relation between private and public within the sphere of work in theatre. Together with choreographer Clément Layes she runs the company Public in Private, founded in 2008 in Berlin. In 2012 Vinovrški gained her Master of Arts degree at the HZT University in Berlin, and this year she started her PhD at the ATW University in Giessen, under mentorship of Dr. Bojana Kunst.
