So many people, so many lives. So many doubts, weaknesses, talents. All searching for their strengths and for a meaningful existence. And let’s not forget, all searching for love, of course! What happens when we are confused and misunderstood? When we find ourselves in a reality we cannot explain? Where is perfection? Is it the point where two opposites meet? Is it the goal of every human being? Is it essential to find meaning to life? Sometimes we need to isolate ourselves from the world, to reach the absurd, believe in ourselves even when we are afraid. Weakness is great. The strength useless. Things change, age, degrade. We walk aimlessly but we don’t stop. It is our fate. Our reason for being. Our identity.
In Kokoro (Japanese for “spirit”, “heart” and “thought”) Spanish choreographer Lali Ayguadé brings together four dancers with very different backgrounds who search for meaning and love. How do they handle obstaclesin their paths? What throws them out of balance? What gives them hope? Opposites collide. Love and fear are in the air. As in a film without words, accompanied by a cinematic sound-scape, a story unravels that is just as familiar as it is surprising.
Lali Ayguadé was trained in contemporary dance in Barcelona and the P.A.R.T.S. dance course in Brussels led by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. After her training, she danced with the Publik Eye Company in Denmark and later with the company led by Akram Khan, for whom she performed KAASH in 2002. She incorporates her experience as a powerful performer with such renowned choreographers like Wim Vandekeybus and Hofesh Shechter into her own work, which is always supremely powerful. She collaborates with all kinds of artists, often from entirely different backgrounds. In 2010 she was nominated as „Exceptional dancer“ in the Critics awards of London.
