SWAN LAKE - Swans, from what I remember from childhood, are symbols of grace. The regal beauty, slow yet firm gestures...But today’s society has taken away their homes, and abandoned them to await their death. What do these swans, at the brink of death, want? The opaque, smog-stricken skies, miles and miles of endless asphalt and skyscrapers... The lost, homeless swans pass through these gray cities of pain. Swan Lake, a performance on today’s environmental issues, was first put onto stage at the 2011 SIDance Festival and won the Grand Prix at the Seoul International Choreography Festival. The choreographer merged and reconstructed Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake with poppin and groove of hip hop, power b-boying moves and contemporary movements
TIME TRAVEL 7080 - attempts time travel with music that the Korean 7080 generation has been listening to. The performance makes us look back at the slices of life amidst the customs of that very era - such as the mini skirts, hair length restrictions, prohibited songs, national rituals which are but formalities - and the social turmoils like the Gwangju Uprising and democracy movements, and additionally sets out what our future may look like. This performance, with dancers trained in both hip hop and contemporary dance, features agile, smooth group dance and original solos to connect heart-to-heart with the audience. To bridge the gap between the stage and the audience, the vitality of hip hop and the vivid expressions of contemporary dance reach out; through each dancer the audience will be able to better feel each individual's laughter, tears, feelings of friendship and love sometimes in a jolly or some other times in a misty-eye kind of way.
AHN Soo-young first started dancing as a street dancer, and debuted with Eve’s Choice in 2007. The next year in 2008, he presented his solo piece A Choice of a Man at the Singapore Esplanade Theater. With the highly praised Swan Lake at the Across HIP HOP program of SIDance 2011, his Company was designated to participate at the Korea Moves at the beginning of this year and this one was a landslide success with all seats selling out in all 13 performances at 4 countries of Denmark, Sweden, Germany and England. Swan Lake received much attention from the media of these European countries and was even exceptionally reported within News9 of KBS, the Korean mainstream TV channel. Recently, the Company presented Time Travel 7080 at the HanPAC Rising Star stage, which used our very pop music to connect with what we call the Korean 7080 generation – those who’ve grown up during the 1970s and 1980s. The piece, time traveling to the 70s and 80s, features much character and a witty story, earning AHN the nickname of Charlie Chaplin of the Korean contemporary dance scene. Distinct with his own colors through various collaboration works with experienced choreographers like CHUNG Yeun-soo the rising artist is constantly invited overseas. He is now keeping himself busy with his dance PhD at Sejong University and choreography works, as well as working with his new AHNSOOYOUNG COMPANY, founded in 2013.
