The performance, which contains a dominant theatrical element, focuses on the socially oriented rituals that characterize humanity the world over: intimacy, love, rejection, mam- age and sensuality. It's all too easy to be cynical and sarcastic about ritual, but it comes from a deep, strong place. It's as ancient as man and there is a need for it, a reason for it. We have a need to sign a contract be- tween each other. The strong, compelling, fast-paced Mediterranean music played live on stage by the five-member band provides a unifying framework for Vertigo's dance number. The pounding energy of the players often surpasses that of the dancers and causes a delicate play of shifting attention between dance and music. The seven Vertigo dancers portray the futility of most hu- man relationships, inept attempts to reach for love, and the desolation, pretension, empty encounters that consequently follow. Make no mistake, however, this is by no means a gloomy work. There is lots of fun filled dancing and playful acts.
